Ministry Opportunity Description

Brentwood Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles is looking for a full-time Children's director to lead and grow our ministry to children and their families. We are a 670 member congregation in the Reformed tradition with about 100 children in our program.

DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN'S MINISTRY – Brentwood Presbyterian Church

Mission of Children's Ministry
Children's Ministry at BPC is committed to nurturing children in their Christian faith, providing them with opportunities to grow in God's grace, and enabling them to develop the spiritual resources necessary for life's journey and for a loving relationship with God, self and others.

Position Summary:
The Director of Children's Ministry is responsible for maintaining and expanding the programs and faith formation of our children (birth - 5th Grade) and families in partnership with the Children’s Ministry elders, Children's Ministry Committee (CMC) and Associate Pastor.

Key Responsibilities:
1.The director supports the vision of the Session by developing, supervising and taking responsibility for all programs and curricula for children, excluding the Brentwood Presbyterian Church Preschool, in partnership with the Children’s Ministry elders and CMC, (e.g. Sunday morning programs, special events, summer Vacation Bible School (VBS), parents’ date night, hands-on Mission events, etc.).
2. The director is not expected to do everything, but to work with the elders to equip them to invite others to serve and to build teams. The director has to also invite, equip, empower, communicate with and support all volunteers and teachers to serve.
3. Plan and organize, with the Coordinator of Children's Ministry and WAM (Worship, Arts & Music) Director, the weekly Sunday morning programs, i.e. WAM & BPCKidz (Sunday School).
6. Ensure that a welcoming, safe and nurturing environment is created and maintained for the children and their families.
7. Mentor CMC for the successful planning and implementation of curriculum and special events supportive of the spiritual formation program.
8. Maintain open and on-going communication through regular contact with families, CMC, staff and teachers.
9. Attend monthly CMC meetings and weekly staff meetings.
lO. Attend weekly planning and collaboration meetings with the Associate
Pastor and Coordinator to Children's Ministry, regularly meet and/or plan with the elders.
11. Liaison to the Brentwood Presbyterian Church Preschool and collaborate with their director on joint projects and events.
12. Other duties as requested by the Associate Pastor or elders.

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Proven experience working with children in large and small groups, and knowledge of child development.
2. A creative, flexible and enthusiastic person who can inspire and lead staff and volunteers.
3. Proven ability to invite, nurture, and train volunteers and build teams to accomplish goals.
4. The ability to work independently as well collegially as part of a ministry team.
5. Effective preparation and distribution of materials and good at time management.
6. Computer skills in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel), and budgeting.

Essential (or Desired) Characteristics:
1. A strong Christian faith, a commitment to Christian values and a willingness to support the tenets of Reformed theology
2. A sense of calling to the education and spiritual development of children
3. A strong commitment to personal spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being
4. A strong commitment to servant leadership, building teams and partnering with others.

1. Bachelor's Degree, preferably in related field and/or certified Christian Educator
2. Experience working with children including understanding child development and behavior, teaching techniques, classroom management, preparing and implementing curricula, and planning events.
3. Experience in administration including group leadership, team building, and the recruitment, training and support of volunteers.

Accountability and Evaluation:
1. Reports to the Associate Pastor, collaborates with the elders to Children’s Ministry
2. Supervises the Coordinator of Children's Ministry
3. Staff to the Children's Ministry Committee
4. Performance reviewed by Associate Pastor following 90 days and annually thereafter

Position Specifics:
Hours: 40 hrs/week; required to work on Sunday mornings
Benefits: Health, vacation, and other paid benefits outlined in the BPC Employee Handbook (Note: vacation not to be taken during Advent or Easter/Holy Week.
Salary: $40k-, based on experience
FSLA Status: Exempt
