BS-1121 Basic Hebrew II (3 Units) - The second (intensive) half of a course aimed at enabling students to achieve reading knowledge of biblical Hebrew. (Prerequisite BS1120 or equivalent)

BS-1003 Basic Greek II (3 Units) - The second (intensive) half of a course aimed at enabling students to achieve a basic reading knowledge of biblical Greek. (Prerequisite BS1002 or equivalent)

FT-2543 Prairie Home Theologies (1.5 Units) - This course is intended to help students explore the Church's manifold theological traditions as they intersect practical realities of life and ministry--with an emphasis on rural and small church contexts. We will seek to nurture a critical awareness of theologies that help interpret and exegete the motifs of life which define ministry in congregations and communities--with a sensitivity to contrasting experiences and cultures. A particular emphasis will be placed on the practical application of theological education to situations and challenges faced in that strange place referred to as "the real world." Learning strategies include: Lecture, discussion, and a final writing project.

The following courses are open only to students admitted to the SFTS Program in Christian Spirituality Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction. DASD courses are scheduled from Jan. 9 to Jan. 28.
   
SPHS-2000 History of Christian Spirituality (3 Units) - This course is a survey of Christian spirituality through the major periods of Christian history. In each period of history, students will consider the lived experience of the faith in terms of particular phenomena, lifestyles, or events. For example, in the ancient period students will reflect upon the experience of conversion in relation to Christian initiation, the spirituality of martyrdom, and the spirituality of monasticism. In addition to such reflection, participants will examine her/his own spirituality and a spirituality of her/his choice. Classes will consist of lectures, discussions, "spiritual exercises," and the practice of spiritual direction. An integrative research paper is required. (Prior admission to DASD program, completion of SP 2465 and SP 2680 required)

SP-2465 Art of Christian Listening (3 Units) - This course will concentrate on the development of contemplative sensibilities and skills necessary for the practice of spiritual direction. Students will explore how one notices and attends to the experience of God's presence within oneself, through others, and in the larger world as revealed in prayer, contemplation of scripture, the witness of tradition, and through a growing awareness of mind, body, feelings, and desire. Lectures, discussion, sharing and contemplative listening groups; spiritual direction practice. Final integrative paper required. (Prior admission to DASD program require)

SP-2499 Art of Discernment (3 Units) - This course treats the theory and practice of spiritual discernment in two of four areas of human experience, namely, the intrapersonal and the interpersonal. It will raise the implications for both individual and group spiritual direction in these arenas. Students will be asked to discern an issue of their own, serve as spiritual directors in the discernment process of others and participate as members of discerning groups. Lecture and discussion, group participation, final paper required. (Prior admission to DASD Program, completion of SP 2465 and SP 2680)

SP-2680 Fundamentals of Spiritual Direction (3 Units) - This course concentrates on the skills and concepts essential to the practice of spiritual direction. Listening, responding, noticing, assessing, discerning, enlarging, and savoring. Concepts discussed range from initial meetings with directees, psychological issues, ethics and liability, special issues in direction and supervision. Classes will consist of lectures, discussion, demonstration, and spiritual direction practice. Final paper synthesizing readings, lectures, discussion, and experience required. (Prior admission to DASD Program required)
