The Rev. Dr. James L. McDonald, president of San Francisco Theological Seminary, will speak to the Marin Chapter of the World Affairs Council on February 27, 2013 at Dominican University in San Rafael, California. The title of McDonald’s presentation will be “Hunger in Africa: Intractable or the Next Frontier?”

For decades, sub-Saharan Africa epitomized the problem of widespread, chronic hunger. Today, 239 million Africans – more than one in four – face hunger issues on a daily basis. Yet, there are signs of change. The conventional notion that Africa is an economic basket case is being challenged by a decade of progress. Africa is poised to make the same kind of dramatic gains that the world has seen in China and India. McDonald will discuss the current signs of hope, obstacles to overcome, and pathways to success for those living in sub-Saharan Africa.

Prior to assuming his position as president of SFTS, McDonald served for 13 years as managing director of Bread for the World, a faith-based organization that promotes policy changes to reduce hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world. McDonald led Bread for the World’s efforts to secure debt relief for the world’s poorest countries, to increase the volume and effectiveness of foreign aid, and to reform US agricultural policies.

“As a collective Christian voice working to urge lawmakers to end hunger here and abroad, Bread for the World believes that people are hungry not because the world lacks food, but because people lack access to quality nutrition. Taking an advocacy approach to fighting hunger and poverty is a necessary action to help vulnerable people,” said McDonald.

McDonald’s presentation to the World Affairs Council will be held on February 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Caleruega Dining Hall on the campus of Dominican University in San Rafael. Reservations are required for guaranteed seating and will be accepted until Friday, February 22. The price for World Affairs Council members is $30 for the dinner and presentation, and $6 for the presentation only. Non-member prices are $35 for the dinner and presentation, and $9 for the presentation only. Pricing for full-time students is $30 for the dinner and presentation, and attendance to the presentation only is free.
