Noel to participate in speaker series on "Building a Moral Economy"

What: “Building A Moral Economy” speaker series
When: Thursday, Sept. 22, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Where: Shiloh Church, Oakland

Rev. Dr. James Noel, the H. Eugene Farlough, Jr. Professor of African American Christianity Professor of American Religion at San Francisco Theological Seminary, will make a presentation at the “Building A Moral Economy” speaker series on Thursday, Sept. 22, at Shiloh Church in Oakland from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

The “Building a Moral Economy” speaker series connects the altar, the academy and the activity of the time by bringing together clergy, scholars and activists to engage in the duty of listening to each other and consciously mulling over complex ideas of the day. The series intends to celebrate, accentuate and amplify equality in the struggle to find answers to today’s dilemmas.

The second session of the ongoing series will focus on the budget and how it affects life in the Bay Area. It is entitled “Debts, Deficits and Doing the Right Thing: Regular Economics for an Irregular Time.”

The three presenters are Noel, Dr. Steven Pitts (University of California, Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education) and Esperanza Tervalon-Daumont (Executive Director, Oakland Rising).

Noel will speak on “The Divine Economy and a Theology of Debt” and will highlight the moral imperatives from the Christian Tradition, which compel people of faith to act given today’s current condition. Pitts will speak on “The Impact of Our Current Crises on The Poor and People of Color.” Esperanza will present “The Oakland Budget: Understanding Challenges and Opportunities.”

This event is part of the vision of the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy (EBASE), the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice (ICWJ) and is supported by Pastors of Oakland.
