San Francisco Theological Seminary graduated 62 students in six degree and diploma programs on Saturday, May 21, on a beautiful, sunny day amid the redwoods at Bouick Field. With 20 graduates from Korea, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Mexico and Canada, SFTS continues to stand out as a training ground for international theologians and pastors.

The Class of 2011 also features 28 students from five countries who earned Master of Divinity degrees, the first professional degree in theological studies. Others among the Class of 2011 are three students with Master of Arts in Theological Studies degrees and five students with Master of Arts degrees conferred by the Graduate Theological Union.

SFTS was also proud to award Doctor of Ministry degrees to 13 students from six countries. The Program in Christian Spirituality awarded 13 Diplomas in the Art of Spiritual Direction.

The annual award winners included Master of Divinity graduate Evans Ledbetter McGowan, who won the Alumni Fellowship. McGowan has already accepted a two-year ordained position with the Lily Residency Program at First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, Mich.

Elizabeth Campbell, who won the Seminary Fellowship, has been accepted into the “For Such a Time as This” program offered through the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Office of Vocation. This two-year residency program seeks to pair small, healthy congregations without pastoral leadership with recent seminary graduates exploring a call to ministry in the small church. Elizabeth will serve in the Ohio Valley Presbytery.

Other award winners include Donald P. Hammond (
Martin Dwelle Kneeland Preaching Prize) and Talitha Given Phillips (David Esler Award in Homiletics).

The 2011 Distinguished Alumnus award went to Rev. Dr. Bruce Reyes-Chow (M.Div. ’95) in recognition of his leading role in the emergent church of the 21st century. Reyes-Chow became the 15th member of the Seminary community to serve as moderator of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), completing his two-year term in 2010. A third-generation Filipino/Chinese American, Reyes-Chow is passionate about working in the intersections of faith, justice, culture and politics.

Delivering the charge to the new graduates was Dr. Laird Stuart, interim president. Stuart will step down in July as SFTS welcomes new president Rev. Dr. James McDonald.
