Anaheim First is one of those PCUSA downtown churches with a rich heritage but which has declined over the decades to, today, barely 100 active members. Wonderful sanctuary and facilities. I took this interim position because I wanted to use my talents for helping churches "turn around." This is a church in redevelopment. The person who fills the proposed intern position here will need to have an interest in working in a "starting from scratch" situation.
     

Position Description

     
I. Purpose
1. Design, plan, initiate and supervise a Sunday morning Children’s Education Program, infants through grade 6
2. Recruit, train and supervise teachers and helpers
3. Assist in the broad range of pastoral duties as required by field education guidelines and agreed upon with the pastor.

II. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develop and be responsible for Sunday morning children’s education, infant through 6th grade.
2. Help design and direct media for community-wide publicity of the program
3. Organize Sunday School Rally Day for the second or third Sunday of September
4. Choose an integrated curriculum for the C.E. program
5. Recruit, train and supervise Sunday school personnel for childcare center (infant & toddler), Preschool – K, grades 1-3, and grades 4-6.
6. Participate in the leadership of Sunday morning worship
7. Preach as arranged with the pastor

III. Required qualifications
1. Ability to envision and initiate new programs (from scratch) in the context of a bottoms-up church redevelopment.
2. Enthusiasm for, and ability to relate to, children of all ages; a sense of what will draw children’s interest.
3. A commitment to the Bible as God’s uniquely inspired word and as the centerpiece of the church’s education ministry.
4. The ability to take the lead in developing fresh new styles of education ministry.
5. An ability to recruit and oversee workers,
6. Effectiveness as a teacher/trainer.

IV. Desired qualifications
1. Experience and training in child development
2. Recent training in contemporary forms and systems of Children’s Education.
3. Able to dream fresh ideas and to compellingly communicate them.
4. Independent initiative: self motivated and self-organized.
5. An ability to preach and participate in worship leadership.

V. Supervision
The Intern Director of Christian Education works under the supervision of the pastor The IDCE has primary oversight of all Sunday school, nursery/child care and other children’s education personnel.
