Daniel Hoggatt
Professor of Church Music DMA, University of Colorado
Biographical Information On paper, Dan Hoggatt teaches church music and leads the Seminary Singers but in actuality, he teaches the joys of praising God in song and how to live to life's fullest possibilities. Involved in church music leadership since his adolescence in the Pacific Northwest, he can rock the piano so joyfully that even a Presbyterian stands up and dances. Hoggatt, who holds a DMA from University of Colorado, can also sit at the organ bench and pour out the technically demanding Widor Toccata, a musical effort that compels students and faculty to listen in awe after morning chapel until the last notes roll off his fingers. Also, Hoggatt does not place one musical style or tradition above another, but instead invites everyone to explore and celebrate all that contemporary and traditional forms of music can bring to enrich and enhance Christian worship. "It is vital that future church leaders understand and appreciate the abundant and varied resources available in the music and worship practices of the past and present, before they make their mark on the future of the church," Hoggatt writes. He is perhaps best known and loved on and off campus through his leadership of the Seminary Singers, the campus choir. The choir sings at morning chapel, major celebrations, including the deeply loved Lessons and Carols service presented each December. He also directs the Praise Band, which leads the chapel worship service once a week during the academic year.
