Faculty Profile

Robert Coote
Senior Research Professor of Hebrew Exegesis and Old Testament
PhD, Harvard University

Biographical Information
During his 35-year teaching career at San Francisco Theological Seminary, Robert Coote has been mentor and friend to hundreds of students. The seventh holder of the Nathaniel Gray Chair in Hebrew Exegesis and Old Testament, Coote was recently appointed Senior Research Professor. "Reading the Bible is a cross–cultural experience," Coote explains to students. "How to keep the Bible our own while respecting its difference—this is the task of biblical study and interpretation. It requires knowing better both the Bible and ourselves, for which history and philology, including language study, along with literary analysis, rhetorical and ideological criticism, comparative social inquiry, and contemporary social analysis, are essential—all pursued for the love of God without hedge or stint." Coote earned his undergraduate, divinity and doctoral degrees at Harvard. He has published extensively on the history of early Israel, the social history of biblical Israel, and the composition of the first four books of the Bible and of the Prophets. His most recent work, on implications of Mark's use of the Old Testament, appeared in a book co-edited with Associate Professor Annette Weissenrieder, The Interface of Orality and Writing: Hearing, Seeing, Writing in New Genres. His current research focuses on the history and rhetorical conceptualization of tribal Israel. Coote's intelligence, wit and humor are well known, though not always immediately evident. They tend to creep up on students gradually.
