Biographical Information
Annette Weissenrieder asks interesting questions. Her answers are even more compelling. Weissenrieder, who holds a PhD from Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg, Germany, analyzes biblical texts in the light of archeological discoveries, ancient art, and ancient philosophical and medical texts. Author and editor of a growing collection of books and articles, Weissenrieder's search for meaning comes out of a deeper cultural contextual understanding. She has been a visiting scholar at Union Theological Seminary, McCormick Theological Seminary and Harvard Divinity School. In collaboration with Gregor Etzelmüller, she has recently published a collection of essays on medicine and religion. The work was based on a conference at the International Research Forum of the University of Heidelberg. She also organized an interdisciplinary conference with Prof. Dr. Balch on Sacred Space with archaeologists, art historians and New Testament scholars at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. Her latest book, co-edited with Senior Research Professor Robert Coote, is The Interface of Orality and Writing: Hearing, Seeing, Writing in New Genres. In the classroom, Weissenrieder sets the academic bar high with lectures that include visual presentations and extensive reading assignments. Students can expect to read secular first century writers alongside biblical texts in their explorations for contextual insights into Scripture. Weissenrieder is equally comfortable in the 21st century interactive, computer based media world. She has led an online course for the German Protestant Church and is co-editor for Biblical Lexicon in the Internet (WiBiLex) for pastors, religion teachers and students.
