Sam Hamilton-Poore

Biographical Information As Director of the Program of Christian Spirituality and Assistant Professor of Christian Spirituality at San Francisco Theological Seminary since 2006, Sam Hamilton-Poore works with several communities of students ranging from those pursuing the traditional Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Theological Studies, post-graduate Doctor of Ministry candidates as well as those in the popular Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction program (DASD). Hamilton- Poore also co-leads several pastoral renewal events such as the weeklong summer Lectionary study, "Before the Cradle and Beyond the Cross." Hamilton-Poore, who has a Doctor of Ministry from SFTS, is an ordained Minister of the Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church and has served congregations in North Carolina, Missouri and Iowa. "I felt drawn to this work," Hamilton-Poore said speaking of his own DASD diploma granted in 1998. He describes the fundamental base of the program's classes as "learning how to pay attention and respond to God's presence and movement in our lives." Hamilton-Poore's recent book, Earth Gospel: A Guide to Prayer for God's Creation, has been well received as accessible for all readers concerned about the environment. Warm, thoughtful and present in the moment, Hamilton-Poore enjoys his work with the wide range of students who cross his path, "It's really life giving, it's a privilege to see transformation occur in them, to see them awakening to the Spirit and emerging into their fullest selves."
